METHODS OF TEACHING GRAMMAR

Meaning Of Grammar :

According to "Dr. Sweet", "Grammar is the practical analysis of a language, its anatomy."

Methods Of Teaching Grammar:

There are four methods of teaching grammar which are as follows:- 

• TRADITIONAL METHOD.               
• INFORMAL METHOD.                   
• CORRELATION OR INCIDENTAL METHOD.               
• THE INDUCTIVE-DEDUCTIVE METHOD.

1. TRADITIONAL METHOD: 

   • Aims at giving everything related to grammar in detailed form i.e. (definitions, rules, examples and exercises).
   • Approach followed is :- Deductive
   • Method followed is :- Traditional 
   • In this method, Text book is used to teach.
   • First of all teacher chooses the topic and tells rules and definitions to the students.The pupils have to memorize all these rules taught to them and practice it in exercises of text book.
   • The only Merit :- Detail of everything related to Grammar is available to them in the Text books.
    

2. INFORMAL METHOD:

   • This method promotes grammar should be taught BY USAGE.
   •  Continuous practice is recommended.
   • Very useful at early stage.
   • Positivity in this method :- Children learn by doing. No need to cram the rules and generalisations. 
   • Demerits:- Time - consuming method, Unsystematic, Not fit for teaching all the rules.
    

3. CORRELATION OR INCIDENTAL METHOD:   

   • Supports belief that grammar should be taught incidentally.
   • When pupils are reading textbook or writing a composition or translating something, Teacher should give - References of grammar here and there.
   • Can't deny the fact during such incidental teaching, normal course of teaching a particular topic is :- Disturbed.
   • This method is NOT COMPLETE in itself. 
   • Advantage:-  1) Natural type of learning is done.                     2) Practical use of gramatical laws while doing activities.                 
    

4. THE INDUCTIVE-DEDUCTIVE METHOD: 

   • Said to be the most Popular and best method by majority of educationists.
   • Normally this method is used to teach Science. 
    

There are TWO APPROACHES involved in this method:-

  

1. THE DEDUCTIVE APPROACH.
2. THE INDUCTIVE APPROACH.   

 THE DEDUCTIVE APPROACH:-

• • "Deductive" means from Generalisation to Application i.e. from law to observation.

  • Teacher proceeds from Observation to Law, from Examples to Rules, from Application to Generalistaions.
